With the world appearing more and more a dangerous place, I'm wondering what Judaism has to say about the possibility of an apocalyptic final event. Does such a concept exist, and how will that play out? The Aish Rabbi Replies: The Jewish people believe in what's called the End of Days. This isn't the final end of the world – but merely the end of history as we know it. After the End of Days the world will continue as usual, with the big exception that there will be world peace. As the End of the Days approach, there are two paths that the world could take. The first is filled with kindness and miracles, with the Messiah "given dominion, honor and kinship so that all peoples, nations and languages would serve him; his dominion would be an everlasting dominion that would never pass, and his kingship would never be destroyed." (Daniel 7:13-14) This scenario could be brought at any moment, if we'd just get our act together! The other path is described as Messiah coming "humble and riding upon a donkey" (Zechariah 9:9). In this scenario, nature will take its course, and society will undergo a slow painful deterioration, with much suffering. God's presence will be hidden, and his guidance will not be perceivable. According to this second path, there will be a valueless society in which religion will not only be chided, it will be used to promote immorality. Young people will not respect the old, and governments will become godless. This is why the Midrash says, "One third of the world's woes will come in the generation preceding the Messiah." (Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan, "Handbook of Jewish Thought") According to the Talmud, as the Messianic era approaches, the world will experience greater and greater turmoil: Vast economic fluctuations, social rebellion, and widespread despair. The culmination will be a world war of immense proportion led by King Gog from the land of Magog. This will be a war the likes of which have not been seen before. This will be the ultimate war of good against evil, in which evil will be entirely obliterated. (Ezekiel ch. 38, 39; Zechariah 21:2, 14:23; Talmud – Sukkah 52, Sanhedrin 97, Sotah 49) What is the nature of this cataclysmic war? Traditional Jewish sources state that the nations of the world will descend against the Jews and Jerusalem. The Crusades, Pogroms and Arab Terrorism will pale in comparison. Eventually, when all the dust settles, the Jews will be defeated and led out in chains. The Torah will be proclaimed a falsehood. Then, just when we think the story is over, the Messiah will come and lead the Jewish redemption. He will inspire all peoples to follow God, rebuild the Temple, gather in any remaining Jewish exiles to Israel, and re-establish the Sanhedrin. (Maimonides – Melachim ch. 11-12) In many ways, the world is a depressing place. But life is like medicine. Imagine a person with a serious internal disease. Taking the right medication will detoxify the body by pushing all the impurities to the surface of the skin. The patient may look deathly ill – all covered in sores. But in truth, those surface sores are a positive sign of deeper healing. The key is to maintain the hope of redemption. Rabbi Azriel Tauber, a successful businessman and Torah scholar who lives in New York, is a survivor of the concentration camps. Rabbi Tauber says he was able to survive the camps because every day, his father would encourage him and say: "Don't despair, my son, for redemption can come at any moment." The Torah provides our hope for the future. Maimonides says that every day, a Jew should yearn for the Messiah. Not in order that Jews should rule the world, or to be exalted amongst the nations, nor to eat, drink and rejoice. But rather we yearn for the Messiah so that we will have time for the wisdom of Torah, with nothing to disturb that pursuit. The message should be clear: Keep focused on the Torah, for it is the voice of reason in our world of insanity. If we live with that knowledge today, then the Torah promises that the final resolution will come more quickly and painlessly. And at the very least, living with this understanding is sure to keep us among those who have preserved their sanity in this world of confusion. Indeed, the world is in desperate need of Messianic redemption. War and pollution threaten our planet; ego and confusion erode family life. To the extent we are aware of the problems of society, is the extent we will yearn for redemption. As the Talmud says, one of the first questions a Jew is asked on Judgment Day is: "Did you yearn for the arrival of the Messiah?" How can we hasten the coming of the Messiah? The best way is to love all humanity generously, to keep the mitzvot of the Torah (as best we can), and to encourage others to do so as well. Despite the gloom, the world does seem headed toward redemption. One apparent sign is that the Jewish people have returned to the Land of Israel and made it bloom again. Additionally, a major movement is afoot of young Jews returning to Torah tradition. By the way, Maimonides states that the popularity of Christianity and Islam is part of God's plan to spread the ideals of Torah throughout the world. This moves society closer to a perfected state of morality and toward a greater understanding of God. All this is in preparation for the Messianic age. The Messiah can come at any moment, and it all depends on our actions. God is ready when we are. For as King David says: "Redemption will come today – if you hearken to His voice." Today's Joke. A family of Schmohawk Indians was sitting around the shtetl one night: The papa, Geronowitz, the mama, Pocayenta, and the beautiful. In 1949, six British RAF warplanes enforcing a UN ceasefire were shot down by Israeli forces over the Israel-Egypt border. Throughout the 1948 War of Independence, Israel was terribly outnumbered in manpower and weapons -- initially the army did not have a single cannon or tank, and its air force consisted of nine obsolete planes. The United States had imposed an arms embargo on the region, forcing the Israelis to smuggle weapons, mainly from Czechoslovakia. Meanwhile, the British provided large quantities of weapons to Arab forces: Jordan's Arab Legion was armed, trained and led by British officers. Today in Jewish History. In 1949, six British RAF warplanes enforcing a UN ceasefire were shot down by Israeli forces over the Israel-Egypt. The value of doing good deeds is primarily when they come through difficulties and suffering. Daily Lift » "My transgressions are known to me and my sin is ever before me" (Psalms 51:5) . Lo, I was begotten in sin, and my mother conceived me in iniquity (ibid. 7) . In this heart-rending psalm, David begs for forgiveness for his relationship with Bath-Sheba. While David does state that he was "begotten in sin," or in other words, that he may have been born with the character trait of intense passion, he does not cite it to free himself of guilt. In verse 5, he owns up to his transgression and does not try to absolve himself. David accepts full responsibility for his behavior, even if it comes from an inherited trait. How refreshing is this thought! How different it is from the teachings of modern psychology, which so often scapegoat parents and excuse even the grossest misbehavior by arguing that the person was a victim of early-life experiences or influences that distorted his or her values, and hence should not be held responsible for subsequent misdeeds. In this exquisite psalm of teshuvah (repentance), David rejects this position. He says that we must assume responsibility for our behavior, regardless of factors from our past. Today I shall. try to avoid projecting blame onto others, and accept full responsibility for whatever I do. Australia - Play British Sports. - Australians put beets ("beetroot") on their burgers (blech) - For whatever reason they just LOVE vegemite as a spread (vegemite is like a salty spread -- I can't really even describe it but to this American's mouth it tasted terrible) - Australian and US wines are both top notch. - Probably the friendliest people I've met are Australian -- they are very outgoing and not at all reserved like their British cousins. Americans for the most part are also friendly, but I think a little more guarded. - The accents between the US and Australia are obviously quite different. - Australia seems to have a lot of words/slang that only they understand. I'm sure the US does as well (or even different parts of the US), but since I'm a native of the US I'm not sure which phrases/words we use that would make an Australian say "what does that mean"? - I think a lot of the residential neighborhoods that I saw (at least around Sydney) seemed very similar to American neighborhoods with single family homes on fairly large yards, two car garages, etc. - It seems that Australia and the US have similar shopping areas, with the usual "big box" stores, supermarkets, etc. I didn't see a big difference in the retail environment between the two countries. - It seems like every animal in Australia is the "most poisonous" thing on earth that will kill you -- jellyfish, spiders, snakes, not to mention crocodiles, great white sharks, etc. While the US has some poisonous animals as well, I've never encountered so many warnings about the animals as I did in Australia. We couldn't even go in the water at the beach because it was "box jellyfish season" and they will kill you if you touch them. - That said, Australia makes up for it with Koalas and Kangaroos. Although they treat kangaroos like the US treats white tail deer -- kind of a pest. Rustic Twig Christmas Tree Ornaments. We have a big Christmas get-together each year and as a tradition, we make homemade ornaments for everyone. There’s almost forty of us, and it’s never on Christmas day. There is just too many of us. We ALWAYS try to make these ornaments on the cheap, and I’m usually the one who has to come up with the idea… or maybe I insist, but who is keeping track? Anyway, I’d been tossing around ideas and came up with a rustic twig Christmas tree on a cutting of plain old cardboard. The twigs were collected from the yard = FREE. I salvaged the cardboard from cereal and soda cartons = FREE. For the cost of some hot glue and a sparkly pipe cleaner, I was able to make these ornaments for almost nothing. I’ll have to get final approval from the, ahem, Board of Annual Homemade Christmas Ornaments (aka: sister and nieces), but I’m pretty sure this is the ornament we are going to go for this year, and here is how we are going to make them: How to Make Rustic Twig and Cardboard Christmas Tree Ornaments. I’ve included links to products that you can purchase if you don’t want to completely go the DIY route with this project. -Twigs collected from the yard (try for pencil sized diameter pieces) or Pre-Packaged Twigs, like these. -Cardboard pieces from cereal boxes or soda cartons. -Hot glue gun and plenty of glue sticks or a Quick-Hold Craft Glue, that I like as an alternative to hot glue. -Pruning Sheers, like this pair ( these are optional but helpful if you don’t want to hand-break all the twigs. ) -Pencil and paper. -Christmas colored pipe cleaners (or any kind of ribbon or twine) (You can skip this step, if you are using the pre-packaged branches.) Collect twigs and place them on a cookie sheet. Pre-heat at 200 degrees (f) Place cookie sheet with twigs into oven and dry for 45 minutes, this is done to kill off any critters. Cut card board pieces 6″ x 1″ Take a push pin and make a hole 3/4″ down from top. Take a pencil and poke through the hole. Make a template on plain paper by drawing a line around the card board piece, mark for the hole, and then drawing a 4″ – 4-1/2″ horizontal line across about 1″ up from the bottom. Separate twigs into small, medium and large piles. This step helps keep you organized. Break branch pieces off the larger part of the twigs and put them into the small pieces pile. Remove any parts of bark that seem to be crumbling. Also, discard any pieces that are too wavy or knotted. Break a piece of twig 4″-4-1/2″ long and place on the horizontal line on the paper template. Continue to break more pieces, each one a bit smaller than the one below it to build the tree upward toward the marked hole. Make sure to stop at the marked hole. This can also be done with a pruning tool if you don’t want to have to hand-break all the twigs yourself. Lay one of the card board pieces down on a non-porous surface, such as a piece of laminate shelving or the back side of a new cookie sheet. Run a thick bead of hot glue horizontally, one inch up from the bottom of the card board piece and attach the first and largest twig. Alternatively you can use my favorite quick hold glue if you don’t want to use hot glue. Run a thick bead of hot glue just above the twig length, onto the card board piece and place the next largest twig down. Continue to build the tree, making sure to use the hot glue to secure each twig into place by loading lots of glue along the length of each twig. Let the glue dry for a few minutes and then pry up the piece of card board from the surface you were using to do the gluing. Alternate twig types and colors for a varying effect. If you have knotted pieces, try to place the twig down with the knot facing upward. Don’t worry about making the perfect tree. Anything close will end up looking like a Christmas tree, trust me 🙂 Add any kind of twine or ribbon to create a hanger. I made some up with pipe cleaners, which is all I had on hand at the moment: Run a piece of pipe cleaner thru the hole and back to form a loop for hanging. Leave one end long and one a bit shorter. Twist the pipe cleaner together on both sides of the card board piece. Twist the smaller piece into a ball. Wrap the larger piece around a pencil to make a curly-Q. I really like the variations of color and texture on the twigs and how that all comes together into a Christmas tree. Not to mention, the cost for making these ornaments was almost free. I hope these ornaments get approval as the chosen ornament for this year’s Christmas gathering. Does your family have a holiday tradition like making ornaments? Blechy napadají nejčastěji psy a kočky. Spot on pipety proti blechám pro psy i kočky. Chrání zvíře proti dospělým blechám a navíc zabraňují rozvoji vývojových stádií blech v naší domácnosti. Přípravek dlouhodobě účinkuje i proti klíšťatům. Me obojek foresto zabil 13 letou yorkšírku, zapusobil opacne nez mel a zlikvidoval nejdrive ledviny a pak vse ostatní.
